JONES

Good work so far Eliot. Lyric analysis is good - once you have decided on a song consider reanalyzing with shot ideas and a more detailed description of the visuals you will want to create. You could also use your analysis of other music videos to understand the way they incorporate concept/ performance elements to their video. Questionnaire ideas look good - try to find ways of asking your target audience what they find engaging about the music genre/ artist and what other music videos they watch/ listen to.

Questionnaire Analysis

This data helped me have a clear understanding what i need to focus on to widen mt target audience

Questionnaire and Target Audience

When creating a questionnaire, i decided it was necessary to ask a wide audience and variety of different people to select and show me what they believe are essential features to make a high quality music video. Although i am very aware my Target Audience won't be discovered through this, it will help me broaden my ideas and apply them into my style of video. This therefore will hopefully widen my audience range as it will appear to different types of people.

When looking at the context of my Music Video, it is a video made to celebrate the achievements of the artist and is created with the idea of involving new footage and actual footage from the artists time. An example of this is Johnny Cash's 'You used to love me a lot', which was a concept music video released after his death to represent the lyrics and his legendary status. This therefore told me that my Target Audience was going to be specific fans of 'The Eagles' hence it was necessary for me to make a questionnaire not to find out who my audience is, but to expand it and appeal to different audiences also.

General idea of the overall target audience

My target audience is a niche crowd as the style i am approaching with is from an older generation. This allows me not to look so closely when targeting young audiences due to their lack of awareness as shown in the above questionnaire and analysis.

Lyric Analysis of- The Eagles 'One of These Nights'

This is a basic analysis to see what i could possibly do for the video, regarding the words used in the song.

Lyric analysis of Bob Seger- 'Against the Wind'

A brief idea on how i would approach using this song in regards to a video.

Table to narrow down song choice

This table was created before choosing a song to narrow down my choices. This allowed me to highlight good choices, possible choices, and songs that were not appropriate when regarding my resources and ideas.

Copyright Permission for the chosen song

This email was sent to ask for permission to use the song i wish to include in my music video. However due to it being an old song, it was hard to track contact information.

What am i going to take from the videos i analysed?

This is my first summary of how i'm going to film, but will be shown in full within my storyboard and timeline.

Camera:
When looking carefully at three music videos, i have developed an understanding on what features i want to take from each.
Shot 1: Zoomed shots- Use this to emphasise props and how they represent the lyrics, e.g. focus on lighter to show their is hope, then zoom in and focus on the lighter closing, e.g. symbolising; is there hope?
Shot 2: Establishing shots- These were shown in Bob Dylan's Visions of Johanna video which shows long shots which establish a city for example. This will give my video a variation of shots and symbolise how far their is to search. For example a large landscape of woods shows the difficulty to find something.
Shot 3: Canted Angles: This was often shown in the video by the Beastie Boys- Sabotage. This particular feature was one i chose as it doesn't just give a disorientated feel, but also an old vintage feel due to the lack of stabilising equipment at this particular time. This will help keep the videos conventions and genre specific and not ruin the character of the video. An example of this will be a canted angle of the artist on a chair by a bedside table.
Shot 4: Hand Held shots: These shots will help to once again focus on the vintage feel of the video. For example the shots i intend to include of the full moon will be slightly shaky to emphasise the old style of filming which would all of been hand held.
Other general shots: I intend to also include further shots such as close ups and extreme close ups on particular objects and the artist. These shots will be used to emphasise a particular feature in relation to the lyric, allowing it to be clearer to the audience when following the concept of the video.

Editing ideas: The filters shown in the Cranberries video- Linger, display a very classic approach. The consistent black and white and dark filters keep it very old fashioned, sticking to the era and classic rock genre. This inspired me to use a consistently grainy feature throughout my video and have a particular feature.
Visions of Johanna gave me a very clear idea on how i wanted to keep the beat of the song so fluent to my video, including the pace of shots and how they changed to the music.

Mise En- Scene:

When looking at two of the videos; Sabotage and Linger, i discovered the Mise En Scene didn't exactly match my video, however Visions of Johanna was a hugely important video to inspire me. This video helped me look into vintage props that could demonstrate the lyrics. For example the vintage ash tray and cigarette at the start of the scene matched the idea of the genre straight away, however inspired me to go even further and get props to emphasise the meaning of the lyrics.
